Energy Department awards auto battery grants

The Department of Energy on Wednesday announced which U.S. companies have been awarded grants to build manufacturing plants for electric vehicle batteries.

The $2.4 billion program, established as part of the stimulus plan, sets aside funds for auto battery manufacturing and related components, such as electric motors. (Click here for a PDF to see the full list and for a map of the awards).

President Obama, appearing in Elkhart, Ind., and Vice President Joe Biden, in Detroit, were scheduled to announce the recipients and specific amounts. Energy Secretary Steven Chu is scheduled to speak Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C., and visit a battery supplier, acer aspire 3000 battery .

The grants, which will be matched by $2.4 billion in private investment, will go to battery and component suppliers as well as the big U.S. automakers–General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler–which will receive over $400 million for manufacturing and to test the performance of electric vehicles, such as the Chevy Volt.

In all, there will be 48 funded projects, with many–18 out of the total–located in the traditional auto manufacturing states of Michigan and Indiana.

The grants are meant to jump-start the U.S. industry for auto batteries, aspire 3000 battery. which is now dominated by Asian suppliers. The Obama administration has set a goal of putting 1 million plug-in electric vehicles on the road by 2015.

Of the total, $1.5 billion is available for U.S. battery manufacturing and $500 million for related technology, such as electric motors. Another $400 million is dedicated for federal agencies to purchase fleet plug-in electric vehicles and to develop the infrastructure needed for plug-in electric vehicles, such as charging stations and training for technicians in electric vehicles.

The White House said that the companies were chosen in a “highly competitive process” where applications were evaluated by the DOE.

Battery makers

For the individual companies involved, the grants can be a lifeline to bigger things, such as volume production. The credit crisis on Wall Street has made it difficult to secure the significant amount of money needed for constructing new manufacturing facilities, particularly for new battery technology.

The top recipient is Johnson Controls, which will receive $299 million to produce nickel cobalt metal battery cells and packs for acer aspire 3000 battery . A123 Systems will get $249.1 million to go ahead with plans to build a factory in Michigan for its lithium ion battery packs and related components.

Dow Koman is set to receive $161 million for its batteries, and Compact Power, on behalf of Korean company LG Chem, will produce the lithium ion battery cells that will be used with General Motors’ Chevy Volt electric car.

Another recipient is EnerDel, which received $118.5 million that it intends to match with the same amount to expand lithium ion battery manufacturing in its home state of Indiana. EnerDel has supply agreements with Fisker Automotive and Think. Saft America will receive $95.5 million to produce lithium ion cells and batteries for industrial, agricultural, and defense vehicles, aspire 1680 battery ,aspire 1410 battery .

EnerDel CEO Charles Gassenheimer said that the grant will allow the company to double the volume at its existing auto battery plant in Indiana. “What this money does is accelerate our business plan tremendously,” he said.

The company has also applied for a $480 million loan under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Without the grant or loan, the company projected revenue of $700 million by 2015, but if it receives both it expects it can get to $2.25 billion.

Having a domestic auto battery supply chain will allow auto battery makers to lower the cost by as much as 40 percent in that time frame, EnerDel projects.

“The U.S. taxpayer can expect the United States, which is playing second seat to Asia and Europe in electric drive trains, (to produce) cheaper, more fuel-efficient cars faster,” Gassenheimer said. “We strongly believe that on a total cost of ownership basis, electric cars can be significantly cheaper today than gasoline cars.”

Charging stations

Hybrid vehicles now use nickel metal hydride batteries but many new models of electric cars set to come to market over the next two years will use lithium ion batteries, which are already widely used in consumer electronics. Although there are different types, fujitsu lifebook t4210 battery, lithium batteries are preferred because they are lighter and allow for higher energy density.

But there were two battery companies–East Penn Manufacturing and Exide Technologies with Axion Power–in the program that received funds to advance lead acid batteries for “micro and mild hybrid applications.”

The largest grant for developing a charging infrastructure went to eTec, a subsidiary of Ecotality, and Nissan which will test a network of fast-charging stations in cities in Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, and Tennessee.

The DOE will invest $99.9 million, which will be matched by participating companies, lifebook t4220 battery , to test the performance of 5,000 of Nissan’s all-electric Leaf sedan with eTec’s charging stations, in different climates and use patterns.

The DOE’s goal is to have 70 percent of funds spent by the end of September next year and have nearly all the money spent by the following year, Energy Department senior adviser Matt Rogers told reporters on Tuesday, according to Environment & Energy Daily.

A “public-private partnership” is required to speed the transition to new auto technology, said Brian Wynne the president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association industry group. Pumping money into the sector will help auto makers meet demand for electric cars over the next two years and lessen the premium consumers need to pay for the new technology, he said.

What kind of batteries dell gd761,kd476,td347 are stored in good conditions?

According to IEC standards, the battery should be at a temperature of 20 +-5O ° C, humidity of (65 - +20)% under the conditions of storage. In general, the higher the temperature of the battery storage capacity of the remainder of the lower rate. In contrast, as well. Refrigerator temperature in 0-10O ° C when the storage battery of the best places, especially for a battery. The secondary battery even after the loss of storage capacity, but as long as it can re-charge and discharge times to restore.

How long the battery can store?

On the theory, laptop battery storage and energy loss total. Electrochemical cell structure inherent in the decision of the battery capacity loss is inevitable, mainly due to a result of self-discharge. Usually the size of the self-discharge in the electrolyte and cathode material and its solubility after heat instability (easy to self-decomposition) of the. How should we handle aspire 3000 laptop battery problem

Posted on August 25th, 2009 in news | No Comments »

How should we handle aspire 3000 laptop battery problem?

The normal situation is that the laptop will cause self-protection, due to excessive current at the process of full-speed running.

For example, collecting the content from DVD to hard disk, at this time the host and peripheral are power consumption substantially, so the laptop battery probably exceed the protection standard, you no need to worry when meet this kind of situation, just cut the peripheral waiting around 10 minutes and then restart the computer is okay, acer aspire 3000 battery is a good example.

The other normal situation is that the aspire 3000 battery working under a high loading operation condition, in a sweltering environment, adds its own heat produced during discharge, it may exceed the temperature of beforehand protection circuit.

When happen this kind of situation, just take out the battery to a low temperature place, kindly please notes don’t put it into fridge, the battery will return to normal after half a hour. High temperature is quite damage for the lithium laptop battery, try to avoid running the laptop under high-loading and high temperature environment expect you do need to.

In order to keep BIOS state, many laptops have an option of battery calibration, in a few words, this function will full charge the acer 3000 battery and then discharge the battery completely, and then charge full again, this is good for the battery that never discharge thoroughly for a long time. But please remember it will take long time to calibrate the battery in BIOS, so you’d better to do this work before sleep.

A lot of models also can be discharged in Windows system, this is save time, calibrate the battery during working. The last tip, please don’t calibrate the battery frequently; continual deep discharge will cut the battery life, do this work per 2-3 month once is suggested.

Sony Laptop Battery Life Is Improving

Posted on August 24th, 2009 in news | No Comments »

In the past Sony laptop battery year alone, laptop batteries have been getting longer lasting and more durable. And at least there aren’t any more reports about spontaneous combustion.

Call it the Achilles’ heel of laptop technology: battery life. While considerable improvements have been made in processor speed, screen quality, and wireless connectivity, batteries seem to be the one lagging area in mobile computing. That’s not to mention the largest component recall in the history of the PC last year, when thousands of laptop batteries were recalled by manufacturers because of the potential for spontaneous fires.

There is some good news, however. While alternative sources Sony VGP-BPS2C battery

of power –such as fuel cells — may be a few years off, there are some advancements in lithium-ion battery technology, not to mention CPU breakthroughs, such as dual-core processors, that can also help your laptop last an entire day.

“Batteries are probably the slowest moving technology because it’s chemistry rather than silicon, the latter of which tends to see greater strides,” says Bob O’Donnell, Sony VGP-BPS2C vice president of clients and displays at IDC, a Framingham, Mass.-based technology research firm.

That said, 12-cell batteries are considered top-of-the-line today for laptop users, says O’Donnell. Available as an upgrade among many PC manufacturers such as HP and Dell, a 12-cell battery may extend the life up to 10 hours of use, depending on the applications running: typing in a word processor, for example, is a lot less taxing on the battery than, say, playing a DVD movie or surfing the Internet wirelessly in a hotspot.

“The best way to think of 6-, 8-, 9- or 12-cell batteries is as units of power, like having a toy that takes Sony VGP-BPS2C battery” explains O’Donnell. “The higher the number, the longer the battery life.”

But there’s a trade-off, as 12-cell batteries are generally larger than the regular 6- or 8-cell that ships with the unit, therefore users can expect a protrusion on the bottom or back of the laptop. While this might be the case today, O’Donnell says some PC manufacturers might figure out a way for multi-cell batteries to be less obtrusive. “As we need less space for circuitry because of advancements in components, theoretically, there can be more space available for a [bigger] battery.”

Some manufacturers offer a different solution, such as a thin battery that lies along the entire bottom Sony VGP-BPS2A battery of the computer or the ability to insert two “bar” batteries instead of one.

HP’s Compaq 2710p tablet notebook, for instance, offers roughly 5.5 hours with its standard HP DV2000 battery, but more than 12 hours when coupled with HP’s thin extended run time battery.

“Polymer lithium ion cells have now become viable for notebook PC applications,” explains Kevin Clancy, senior notebook PC commodity engineering manager at Hewlett-Packard. “They allow for much slimmer battery designs, such as the 2710p extended run time battery, and offer similar discharge capacity.”

On conventional lithium ion, “we see also continuous improvements in design and chemistry to add incremental discharge capacity,” adds Clancy.

Clancy says laptop owners will likely see a 10 percent Sony vgp-bps2a battery improvement in battery life in 2008.

Laptops with dual-core processors, such as those powered by Intel Core 2 Duo technology, may offer up to 40 percent more energy efficiency than past processors, which results in greater battery life.

“CPUs are getting much smarter today, too, where they sip battery power instead of gulping it,” says O’Donnell.

    Acer Laptop battery maintenance guide

Posted on August 20th, 2009 in news | No Comments »

Battery is the consumables, with a limited life expectancy, most manufacturers warranty for the laptop battery time ranging from three months to a year, Dell is to follow industry standards to provide a limited warranty for one year. For batteries, acer aspire 3000 battery, aspire 1680 battery ,use the correct and proper storage, can significantly extend the battery life of notebook computers.

First, the battery used in a number of attention points.

    1. Why in the use of external power can be won without the battery?

    • (1) of the motherboard to prevent over filling of the chip. When the rechargeable acer laptop battery power to 100, the charge control chips (FET) will cease to charge the battery. We will not have to worry about damage to the battery.
    • (2) connect the battery to avoid loss of BIOS information.
    • (3) to prevent a sudden loss of power data.

    2. To prevent exposure to prevent damp to prevent the erosion of liquid chemicals, batteries to avoid contact with metal objects, such as exposure to short-circuit occurrence.

    3. Long-term do not have notebooks, how to save battery?

We will face a period of time not to use the notebook, the battery is fully charged to preserve, or to be released after save electricity?

Put long-term preservation of photoelectric batteries will lose their activity and even lead to the control circuit protection self-locking and can not re-use, full of power will bring about long-term preservation of the safety problems, the best method is to save electricity use to 40 or so and then stored in cool dry place, about 20 degrees Celsius is the ideal storage temperature. Of course, the best month to come up with to use a battery, the battery can ensure a good state of preservation, but also does not allow the loss of electricity damage to the battery completely.

How can I see the Dell battery power? (For example aspire 1410 battery)

Remove the acer 1410 battery, battery by signs, we can see the situation of the five battery status lights. For two bright, representing 40% of the electricity. Electricity on behalf of the entire light is sufficient, if the 135-liang, that damage the battery.

Second, how to extend as much as possible the work of laptop battery time?

    • (1) to reduce the screen brightness. How to adjust the brightness of the use of laptop batteries, boot by F2, into the BIOS to adjust the Brightness of Video.
    • (2) open the CPU speedstep feature, you can greatly extend the working hours of battery; Cpu’s speedstep feature is enabled by default BIOS of. When using batteries, cpu will automatically down-use, in order to achieve energy-saving purpose. If not enabled, please start by F2, into the BIOS found in Performance, for the Speedstep Enable setting Enabled. (An earlier version of BIOS is the Alt + P to the sixth page, modify intel speedstep)
    • (3) make the best use of standby, sleep and other functions. When a longer period of time without a computer, allowing notebook standby or hibernation, both to save power and extend the life of the computer. (Tips: Please confirm the successful installation of graphics drivers, power management options can be set up.)
WINDOWS in the process of power management settings, we generally can be set to “portable / laptop” (Portable / Laptop).

At the same time suggest that you will use the aspire 3000 battery when the wait time to close the monitor is set to 5 minutes, so when we do not operate within a certain period of time the notebook, it will direct the state of black screen, so other than the screen saver to run more power.

    • (4) when using the battery as much as possible the closure of wireless, Bluetooth and infrared ports. At the same time to remove without the use of peripherals and to avoid the opening of a large 3D program, games and so on, in order to reduce unnecessary battery consumption.

How better to extend notebook battery life

Posted on August 17th, 2009 in news | No Comments »

A misunderstanding: The laptop battery you bought need to be repeated charge-discharge for three times in order to activate the battery.

Unless you buy a notebook computer is more than one year of product inventory, or need not do so because there are batteries when the factory has been activated, and the laptop batteries in the package when the battery into the notebook, after a equivalent to the activation of the test, so you get the inspiron E1505 battery in hand, already have been activated, and again three charge-discharge process was an increase in unnecessary depletion of the battery.

Misunderstanding 2: the first charge must be sufficient enough for 12 hours

This early stage those who do not have the battery control circuit of the li-ion battery models are applicable, but for now have a smart charging and discharging control circuit for the notebook battery is a joke, when the notebook computer battery is full, the charge current will be automatically cut off , even if you continue to charge 120 hours, there will not be any change in status, and generally speaking, even the slowest machine charge, 6 hours when fully charged, the rest of the “charge” is just a waste of their time. It is time to get new machines should be light first rechargeable dell inspiron E1505 battery .

Three errors: the need for regular battery calibration, the total charge released once a month.

Strong memory effect for nickel-hydrogen batteries, which is an essential task, but for Li-ion sony vgp-bps2c battery, the cycle is too frequent, and lithium batteries does not completely eliminate the memory effect, but has greatly reduced the memory effect, if you use the battery is frequent, then you should discharge the battery to the relatively low (about 10 ~ 15%) re-charging, but even if the discharge to the open machines are not (0 ~ 1%), belong to the lithium batteries have greater depth of injury discharge generally every two months to do the operation once it. If you rarely use the battery, then every 3 months as long as the first such operation carried out on it.

Misunderstanding Four: correction to enhance the battery capacity can be

The so-called correction, when the actual capacity of the dell inspiron b120 battery and control circuit capacity not the same as the record, the depth of a battery charge and discharge operation, so that a record control circuit to the battery close to the actual situation, this is a true performance of the battery capacity rather than enhance the capacity of the operation, the key factor here is the actual capacity of the battery, if the actual battery capacity than the control circuit in the capacity to record high, correction can increase the battery capacity seems, if the actual battery capacity than the control circuit the capacity to record low, the correction will reduce the battery capacity seems also that many people debate the reasons for the effect of correction, keep in mind that correction is the true battery capacity is shown by the elimination of the battery and control circuit between the deviation, as demonstrated by the capacity will increase or decrease, this is the status of the battery itself, rather than corrected by your decision. Correction is likely because the battery discharge when the depth of injury, but a substantial reduction in capacity.

Misunderstanding Five: compatible battery charger can also use the

Notebook computer power than mobile phones, the most extreme circumstances, the power needs of apple powerbook g4 battery charging at the same time and running at full speed to meet the required machine power supply, laptop charger compatible with the general no, because the various models of voltage, current, or even interface are different, can be common in a variety of notebook “compatible chargers are” likely to be of genuine more expensive than the charger, even if the same interface, if the voltage and current below the nominal value of machinery, machinery working at full speed when the battery may not be able to obtain sufficient charge current, which damage the powerbook G4 battery is a great one. If the voltage and current much less than the nominal value, or even find that simply can not boot or will boot but can not be recharged, so choose the best power to choose the time and the same original, it can not be found, please pay attention to a certain voltage and current machines to comply with the nominal values of the different products with the plant in general the same interface, but the voltage and current may be different, we must pay attention to this point!

Misunderstanding Six: need fully charged battery (or put photovoltaic) preserved

Or whether it is full of light, in fact, is incorrect, put long-term preservation of photoelectric batteries will lose their activity and even lead to the control circuit protection self-locking and can not re-use, full of power will bring about long-term preservation of the safety problems, the most the preservation of the ideal way is to discharge to 40% and then save, lithium laptop batteries are afraid humid and high temperature, it should be placed in a cool dry place to preserve, but the temperature not too low, otherwise the capacity will be greatly reduced, about 20 degrees Celsius is an ideal Storage Temperature.

Seven Mistakes: battery dying, but also for its own batteries

The battery is a lot of people for such a deadly, manufacturers seem to expect someone to do so long ago, many brands of laptop batteries are designed to have self-locking function, once the batteries from the control circuit, the circuit enters a state of self-locking, Only the use of specific means to be answered, before the control circuit will not work, that is to say the same end-of-life battery, notebook battery can not change the batteries, if you can not have to change batteries, please remember to find the specialized battery maintenance company to wield the sword, its own waste for just small, that after the failure of efforts to frustration and frustration is the worst.

Eight errors: 99% charge has been less than 100%, will continue to charge explosion

Notebook batteries almost no chance of explosion, the largest is the issue of high fever caused by melting of shell, but few give rise to fire, was released by a small number of incidents, the fact is that when the production technology of non-performing, leading to short-circuit in the use of a result, even if Most of this will be short-circuit the battery disconnect circuit protection circuit is not greater damage, unless it is in the protection of the circuit before the batteries short-circuit (before the COMPAQ laptop battery explosion is caused by time should be), and such a thing in my notebook a large number of contacts over the past 3 years, have only seen two cases. It is such a thing in cell phones a lot, in the final analysis or the quality of the battery problem, a large number of poor-quality mobile phone battery assembly, and almost never on the laptop’s battery did not sell, because there is no owner of a large amount of models that should be compatible battery production.

The reason why 99 percent to less than 100 percent after the charge is often because the record of the dell laptop battery control circuitry and battery state of their own bias, the battery has not reached the record control circuit voltage, the power control circuit has been charging the battery in fact has been full of, such problems can usually be corrected through the solution, but even if there is no correction, because the majority of charging circuit will be filled in after a long time can not be disconnected automatically, and even automatically record wise 99% of the current set of 100 %, even the fool has been non-stop design, but also because of the current very small at this time and will not cause harm.

The current laptop batteries are basically the temperature detection circuit, when the battery temperature is too high, most of the control circuit will be forced off the battery to prevent further temperature rise, so this kind of charge to the explosion in the notebook computer battery occurred no less chance of the first prize in the lottery.

Dell Inspiron E1505 battery charging problem

Posted on August 13th, 2009 in news | No Comments »

I’ve had my Dell Inspiron E1505 for about a year and a half now (it’s past its warranty). It has been working absolutely fine for me, except for a slight battery problem which has recently sprung up. Since about 3 days ago, the battery light on the top right above the keyboard has been blinking orange. The battery icon on the taskbar also says that the inspiron E1505 battery has been charging (staying at 95%) for the last 3 days, even though I always use AC power for my laptop. The battery code: gd761 , kd476 , td347 .

In view of their frequent problems dell 6400 battery, all in-line to find some answers from different users. If your battery is also a similar problem emerged in the hope that the answers to these questions will help you.

One: dell inspiron 1501 battery has 5 small dots in it. Those are there for no reason. Those are actually LED lights. There’s a button you can press. If we number the lights 1-2-3-4-5 with 1 being closest to the button, check the lights when you press the button. If 1-3-5 are lit, that means that you have a dead battery and needs to be replaced. Other than that, you’re battery might still be working but nearing the end of its life. Goto support.dell.com -> drivers and downloads -> enter your service tag or system type -> download Dell Quickset. Once Quickset is installed, it will diagnose your battery automatically and let you know if your battery already needs a replacement. It is just sad that batteries are covered with a separate 1-year warranty only.If your dell inspiron E1505 battery ,inspiron 6400 battery, You can also go to www.dellbatteryprogram.com and check if your battery was part of the Dell Battery Recall Program.

Two: To summarize, you replaced the battery and it worked until the charge ran down. You replaced the AC adaptor and it will not work on the adaptor alone. Is that right? That sounds like a problem with the connector in the laptop or in the laptop’s power supply. Those can be difficult problems to fix. You might be able to get the AC adaptor to power it if you hold it at a certain angle where it goes into the laptop, but that would probably be a short lived solution.
You’ll probably either need to have it repaired or replaced. If you’re brave, you could watch Ebay and try to find the same model with other problems and swap parts until you get a working model. If you decide to replace the laptop, you can put the hard drive in an enclosure and recover all the data.

These answers are only reference for you.

    HP Pavilion DV4 laptop Review

Posted on August 11th, 2009 in news | No Comments »

Recently, I buy HP Pavilion DV4 laptop, the overall feeling pretty good, now talking about the advantages and disadvantages:

  • The Good: Near all-day laptop battery life; Special Edition imprint finish helps it stand out from the crowd without being garish; competitive application performance; includes small Media Center remote control.
  • The Bad: Massive 12-cell battery is heavy and awkward; lacks 802.11n Wi-Fi; glossy touch pad is uncomfortable.
  • Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile (2 GHz), 4 GB DDR II SDRAM, 250 GB, 5.1 lbs, 14.1 in TFT active matrix, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
  • This HP Pavilion DV4 Entertainment laptop comes with a 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery(pavilion dv4 battery) and sports an integrated webcam and omni directional microphone with is optimized for low-light conditions.

It uses Windows Vista, which I would much rather have XP, but you can’t find that on any new laptop now unless you buy it separate, so I’m dealing with this. Vista is ok, but it has little quirks that are irritating. The computer itself seems nice-great design-it’s small and light enough for me to bring to work and back with no problem. It’s a sleek design that commands attention, too. The only thing about the appearance is that it is very shiny-it attracts fingerprints and such, plus the screen is very smooth so it reflects what’s behind you very easily, making it a little hard to see in the wrong place.

The wireless connection has not failed me yet-it’s gone great. There is a webcam attached to the top of the screen built into the frame. I haven’t used that yet, so I can’t report on the functions of the webcam. The keyboard is easy to use, and the mouse pad is very responsive. There are touch controls at the top of the keyboard for mute, volume, wireless on/off, and video player. They all work very well, too-it’s a nice design. The hp pavilion dv4 battery has lasted a few hours on its own without asking to be plugged in, so that’s pretty good, too, if you ask me.

But for me ,My favorite is that its batteries, it can be general for other battery(hp compaq presario CQ40 battery , presario CQ50 battery , presario CQ45 battery , presario CQ60 battery , presario CQ70 battery )

Overall, this seems to be a good deal. It’s a cheaper version of a laptop, but it’s been very reliable. I would recommend this computer to someone who uses their laptop lightly for the same sorts of things I do-if you do intense gaming or a lot of video playing and large file storage, this may not be the model for you. It definitely had ample space for all my personal stuff, though, and it displays and works with my data very well.
